Drift. This series explores the tension between stillness and movement. Using repetition of lines, shapes, and layers, these drawings represent water, and the duality between control and freedom.
With these works I hope to evoke calm and peace, for in their creation, I reach a state of meditation through the balancing of chance and intuition within the limitations and rules structured for each piece. Through the restriction of shape, color, and line weight, I explore how far I can push the medium of pen and paper. I plan each piece before execution, drawing the circles and mapping out the layered compositions and colors. However, within this structure, the flow of line is completely left to intuition and chance. The use of the circle within these pieces symbolizes the idea of wholeness, or of the cyclical movement that is central to life and ever present in the motions of water.
This series also invokes a sense of distance; by observing the many horizons each form blends together into a landscape of line and color. The vellum acts as a veil or fog between the layers, softening the lines to create a sense of depth, or of various currents moving together. These layers and distance are also suggestive of layers of memory within our experience.
Drift attempts to reach a state of stillness within these moving spheres, and to touch upon something unintentional yet controlled, like a leaf floating on a river current.
